Controlled, spring-loaded strength through full range, on twelve reformers at the Marina studio.

Yasmin certified in reformer work during a long year out with a shoulder, and runs the class the way a strength coach would: positions held with intent, tempo prescribed, and the spring setting treated as a load to be progressed rather than a comfort setting. It is not a soft class. It is a precise one, which is a different thing.

Twelve beds and one coach means your form is corrected rather than assumed, which is the whole argument for doing this in a studio rather than from a video at home.

01

What it trains

Strength through range, and control at the end of that range — the part of a movement most people are weakest in and least often train. The reformer lets load be applied where bodyweight cannot reach, particularly through the hips, adductors and deep trunk.

The adaptation is largely neuromuscular: better recruitment of the muscles that stabilise the pelvis and shoulder blade, and better tolerance of positions the body currently avoids. It also trains eccentric control, since the spring is always trying to return and you are always resisting it. Members who lift heavily tend to find it exposes a side-to-side difference they did not know they had.

02

Who it suits

It suits people who want strength work with very little spinal loading. It suits members in a heavy Strength block who need a session that supports it rather than competes with it. It suits people returning to training after time off, and it suits desk-bound weeks particularly well.

It suits you less if you want a large conditioning stimulus — your heart rate will not spend much time high. If you are currently under the care of a physiotherapist, bring their guidance with you and the coach will work within it; we will not work around it, and we will not contradict it.

03

What a session looks like

Five minutes of breathing and pelvic positioning on the bed, which sets up everything that follows.

Ten minutes of footwork on the springs — the reformer equivalent of a warm-up set, building range and load together.

Twenty-five minutes of the main sequence, moving through hips, trunk, upper back and shoulders. Tempo is called; most repetitions are slower than they look and the difficulty is in the control rather than the count.

Ten minutes of stretching and down-regulation, finishing lying down. This is one of the two classes on the timetable that is designed to leave you calmer than you arrived.

04

How it scales

Spring tension is the primary scaling tool and it is adjusted per person, per exercise, without anyone announcing it. Range is the second — a shorter, well-controlled range is always preferred to a longer, wobbly one. A beginner works with lighter springs, shorter levers and more coaching contact. An experienced member works heavier springs, longer levers, single-sided variations and slower tempos.

05

What to bring

Grip socks are required for hygiene and safety and are available at the desk if you forget yours. Fitted clothing rather than loose — the coach needs to see your pelvis and ribcage to correct you, and loose fabric catches in the carriage. Water. No shoes on the beds.

06

How often, and what with

Once or twice a week, and it is one of the classes where consistency matters more than frequency — one session every week for six months does more than three sessions a week for a month.

It pairs well with everything, which is unusual. It is particularly useful the day after a heavy Strength or Olympic session, and it is the class we suggest most often to members travelling for work who want to hold on to something while the rest of the week falls apart.
